Cleaning a Recovery Cylinder Hey everybody, What is the best way to clean a recovery cylinder if it was used for R only and now I need to use it for ra? I don't want to cross contaminate the refrigerants? Is there a way to flush out the tanks or do I have to buy another one? Interesting thought.

I just have different Recovery tanks for difterent flavors. If you help others then you are a Success. Do that a few times, reinstall everything, pull a good vacuum on it and call it good. I'll admit I've used a tank for a different refrigerant after just pulling a good vac on it and never had any problems.

Course I'd never do that with a tank that had a burn out refrigerant in there though. Easiest would probably be to just exchange it for a new one and let the tank company worry about the clean up. I am wondering about cleaning refrigerant thats been recovered from a system to be reused in other systems. Someone told me all the refrigerant they recover they clean with a filter drier and through some somewhat simple process he puts all his refrigerant in larger tanks. Just wondering if anyone knew of how this process works, what i need to do.

BTW first time posting Most recovery machine manufacturers make cleaning kits to fit their machines. Most of the time I pump the refrigerant through a drier to a storage bottle, then put it back in the system it came from.

One for R22, another for RA. When I start with other refrigerants I will have to get extra bottles for each one. Extra make up refrigerant comes from the bottle, as scrapped systems that have not lost all to a leak, but where the compressor is tired, but still trying to operate with a coil that is pipe only and no fins get the same treatment before they meet Mr angle grinder and make the last boat trip to Ghangzhou.

Most recovery machine will remove some moisture and oil but the key is which refrigerant you are recovering, single refrigerants like R22 and RA don't have a problem going out of spec but some of the new blends are quite unstable like RD which contains 3. Regards, Nando. Hi ash This was ten years ago on the last phase out of the good refrigerants. The onus here would no should be that all refrigerant is returned to the manufacturer.

The or some of the ingrediants could be seperated from recovered refrigerant. Stills are great for making booze too.

The filter drier will remove partially the moisture, but you need a liquid separator to remove the oils acids as well, otherwise, the recovered gas is a residue. All rights reserved.Refrigerant must be recovered otherwise huge fines can be imposed. The EPA does allow for de-minimis release, or basically refrigerant released when connecting hoses to and from a unit or tank. Pressure at the recovery machine will show when all valves are open. Purging the lines.

Refrigerants should never be mixed R,R, R should all be kept separate. While doing recovery from empty 40kg cylinder to another 12kg cylinder head pressure increase after 2kg refrigerant recovered and the machine stops.

Before I used to recovery 8kg refrigerant from different empty cylinders to the recovery cylinder 12kg. I found a recovery tank the other day mark mix gases. You charge it like you would out of the refrigerant tank. The recovery tank becomes your supply tank in other words.

Recovery tank Tanks with a yellow top are designated Recovery Tanks. Recovery Machine. Refrigerant scale. How To Use A Refrigerant Recovery Machine The gauges should be turned off and then connected to the high and low sides of the unit to be recovered from. Red goes to the high side, Blue goes to the low side. The center yellow hose goes to the suction line of the recover machine marked IN, a dryer should be placed here to help keep contaminants out.

A single hose goes OUT of the recovery machine to the recovery tank. Set the recover tank on a scale to measure how much refrigerant is removed from the unit, and ovoid overfilling the recovery tank. By law a tank can only be filled to 80 percent capacity. After everything is connected the air purged from the hoses.

This is done by opening all the valves from the unit to the tank, only the tank valve should be off, then at the tank letting the air push out of the hoses. This will only be done for a few seconds. At the tank unscrew the hose slightly until air is heard escaping, after a second or two re-tighten the connection to the tank.

The refrigerant will be under pressure and push the air out of the lines. The recovery tank valve along with all other valves should be open, the recovery machine can be turned on. At the HVAC gauges and recovery machine you should see the pressure begin to drop as the refrigerant goes into he recovery tank.

Be sure to watch the scale as to not overfill the recovery tank, a tank should never be filled pass 80 percent of its capacity. The recovery machine should be working up to it reaches 0 psi on the low-side of the recovery machine. Most new recovery machines will turn themselves off automatically when they reach 0 psi. After the recovery machine has reached zero psi the recover machine needs to be purged. To do this turn the low-side blue valve to purge and the high red side to purge on the recovery machine.

Then watch the gauges on the recovery machine. The low side will go from high-to-low and the recovery machine should shut down when its done. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.During these challenging times, we guarantee we will work tirelessly to support you.

As of Marchthe EPA published a new rule revising its previous rules that prohibited the venting of all refrigerants into the air when servicing a vehicle, whether or not they contain CFCs or global warming gases.

R still shout NOT be vented and should be recovered, but now apparently it is okay to vent Ra and Ryf during servicing procedures. No recovery is required. The new rule also eliminates previous regulatory requirements regarding leak inspection and repair for Ra and Ryf because both do not contain ozone depleting CFC chemicals. In addition, different types of refrigerant must not be intermixed. Recovery and recycling equipment also must be approved by Underwriters Laboratories UL approved.

It also must have a desiccant package to trap moisture, and an in-line particulate filter 15 micron size to trap contaminants. The machine also must purge noncondensable gases NCGs automatically or warn the operator when the NCG level is exceeded to minimize the risk of air contamination.

In addition, any technician who uses the equipment must be trained and "certified" in recovery and recycling service procedures. The Environmental Protection Agency does not want technicians venting refrigerant when servicing vehicles. For many years, this was a common practice because refrigerant was relatively cheap and no one realized it was causing any harm.

Today, R is scarce and expensive, and we know it is harmful to the ozone layer. It is still illegal to vent R into the air, although the rules have been revised as far as Ra, Ryf and other alternative refrigerants are concerned. So goijng forward, it is now legal to add a little refrigerant to a system to detect leaks, and it is no longer required to recover Ra or Ryf from a system prior to making repairs.

Venting of R was outlawed because man-made chlorofluorocarbons CFCs in R damage the Earth's protective ozone layer that shields us from most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation. Scientists have discovered that CFCs react with ozone in such a way that ozone is destroyed faster than it can be replenished by natural processes.

The result has been a measurable thinning of the ozone layer and a big increase in UV exposure, which increases the risk of skin cancer. To make matters worse, CFCs break down very slowly. R is estimated to have an atmospheric lifespan of nearly years! That is why recovery is so important. Reducing global warming was the logic behind not venting Ra. Although Ra contains no chlorine and poses no danger to the ozone layer, it is a "greenhouse" gas that retains heat and contributes to the global warming problem.

So every pound of refrigerant that leaks or escapes into the atmosphere has the same effect as thousands of pounds of CO2.

So although recovery is apparently no longer necessary, it is recommended. Some recovery and recycling machines have a built-in refrigerant identifier. This feature prevents accidental cross-contamination of refrigerants, as well as cross-contamination in the equipment itself. As many as one out of every 10 vehicles on the road today may contain cross-contaminated refrigerant! There is no way to know for sure what kind of refrigerant is actually in a vehicle without testing it.

An identifier will tell you what is in the system and its degree of purity. Most will also detect dangerous flammable hydrocarbons such as propane or butane.

If the indentifier detects the wrong type of refrigerant or a flammable refrigerant, it stops the recovery process and warns the operator. The law requires a separate recover and recycling machine for each type of refrigerant: one for R, one for Ra, one for Ryf and yet another machine for other alternative refrigerants or contaminated refrigerants. To keep costs down, some suppliers offer "combination" recovery and recycling machines that can do handle different refrigerants using separate internal circuits, pumps, filters and storage tanks.

Some of these machines have two separate compressors while others share a common compressor and use a self-cleaning purge cycle to prevent cross-contamination of refrigerant lubricants. Purity standards are also important.
